[ Alberto smiles at the question, looking upwards in thought, holding his chin in his hand for added effect, then glances to Luca a bit slyly. ]
Beh, I dunno if it's the neatest place, exactly... But me and Luz went to this restaurant she heard about called Denny's. It was really hard to find, but we managed.
[ He digs through their plastic bag from the store, and pulls out his classic Monster first, handing the bag off to Luca as he goes on. ]
Thing is, it's timeless — like, there's no time there. All the clocks say it's two in the morning, even when it's— not? I thought the clocks were maybe just broken, but when you come out, it's still the same time as you went in... Really spooky. Definitely the weirdest place I've been, ha.
[ He pops the can open almost pointedly; when he takes his first sip, a wide smile spreads across his face, raising his brow at Luca emphatically. Energy Drink #1 Approved. Here we go... ]
Wow, we should definitely go there sometime! That might be helpful if you ever don't have enough time to really sit down and eat somewhere before you have to go somewhere else...although maybe not if it's hard to find.
[After all, if it's hard to find you might just end up spending all the time you save wandering around looking for this Denny's. When he sees Alberto's look of approval tasting the drink, Luca asks,]
[ He nods at Luca enthusiastically, silently agreeing to show him where the Void Denny's is — because it really is somewhere that could prove really useful, should they ever need some extra time. But for now, cool as that place is, their everyday energy drinks seem far more special. When everything's a novelty, anything's a novelty... ]
Good! Like-fruit-but-not, haha, like you said. Here.
[ He hands the drink off to Luca to try, grinning at him expectantly. He gives him a beat, trying to read his reaction to the first sip. ]
Wow, that is good! It's not like any real fruit I've ever tasted, but it's so much sweeter!
[And because this has only increased his curiosity about the remaining drinks, he hands the monster energy back for Alberto to continue drinking.]
I'm going to open another one to try and we can see how they compare.
[He reaches in and takes out the 'orange dreamsicle'. He's curious about what a dreamsicle even is, and he figures they might as well compare the two monsters. He opens it and takes a sip.]
This one's good, too! Try it!
[He thinks he likes the green monster a little better, but they're both good.]
[ Alberto takes the first can back, sipping once more, and grins when Luca takes out the second Monster. He may not be having a birthday party, but this totally counts. Already his best birthday ever — now it's just gonna get fast, too...
He swaps cans again to try the Orange Dreamsicle, taking a considerable swig and narrowing his eyes in contemplation. ]
This doesn't taste orange. Or like oranges. I don't know what it takes like. Maybe that's the "-sicle" flavor...?
[ Doesn't stop him from taking another deep sip before they swap back, nodding as he deliberates, then hands it off to Luca with a smile and a final verdict. ]
I think the green. We can share, though — they're both good.
[ Alberto clinks his can into Luca's something like a toast, some random human-ism he's recently picked up — so of course he needs to put it into practice.
When Luca points out the sporting goods store, though, Alberto's eyes go wide and he quickly stops sipping his drink, rushing to tug the cord on the bus to signal a stop. Say no more, Luca! ]
Sells stuff to make you good at sports. Let's go.
[ Said so matter-of-factly, like he's certain. But he's already standing, ready to go as the bus slows to a stop. Here they go... ]
Yeah, I agree. The green's the best, but they're both good.
[A place that sells stuff to make you good at sports? Well, they're both already great at sports, but there's always room for improvement so he's all for it.]
All right!
[Once the bus stops, he leads the way off, more than happy to go check out this sports store. Of course, even though Alberto's description isn't entirely accurate, he won't be disappointed when he sees what really is there. He hurries up to the building, and as they near it, he takes in the sheer size of it, much larger than any of the shops he saw around Portorosso and Genova.]
Wow...it's so big. I didn't even think you could have that much sports stuff to fill a building that big.
[ Alberto also is marveling at the size of the building, even just from the outside. But once they're inside, he's all but overwhelmed. American sporting goods shops like these can go... a little wild. Alberto's immediately taken by an elaborate display in the hunting department, catching his eye almost as soon as they walk in. It takes him a second to realize they aren't real animals — which doesn't stop him from rushing them to get a closer look, even before he realizes they're models... ]
[ Alberto follows Luca’s signal, his face lighting up even more. He waves Luca along and dashes off to run the short distance over to the fishing section.
Once they round the corner and get a full view of the section, there’s a huge aquarium replacing a wall into the rest of the store, even extending into the columns, myriad salt water fish swimming by. Alberto turns to Luca with wide eyes, mouth agape. Some of these fish, he’s never seen before, which is exciting, but… there’s a certain irony in having a bunch of live fish imprisoned in a fish tank meant to decorate the section selling weapons to hunt fish. It takes a beat, but Alberto cracks an uncomfortable smirk. ]
Woah—! ...Well… This is awkward, hah. Ooh, but look, wow!
[ He rushes up to the tank and presses his hands and face to it, nose smushed to the glass, to examine a small shoal of rabbitfish. He glances to Luca, definitely already feeling the energy drinks they’d downed kicking in, as a wider smile spreads on his face, excitement un-dampened… ]
Way better than a bowl! I mean, it's definitely not the open ocean, but I never imagined that humans would build all this to bring fish on land! Although...
[He glances over at the fishing equipment before pointing at the fish, whispering to Alberto.]
[ Alberto grimaces and glances over his shoulder at a display of fishing rods, then to the fish, and finally to Luca, leaning over to whisper back to him. ]
Let's hope not. What if they're kept here to show shoppers how the stuff works? For fishing demos...
[ He notices a worker pass nearby, and points to him, grabbing Luca by the shoulder and whispering again (just for fun) ]
[ The "fish manager" seems pretty keen to be on his way, before Alberto trots up to him, holding up a finger to indicate he wants to talk. When the worker catches sight of him, he's fully assuming Alberto to be asking if he's seen their parents, or where to find soccer balls, or frankly anything but: ]
Signore, excuse me! Are you the fish manager?
[ The young man balks, glancing to Luca behind Alberto, as if he can read on his face whether he's being messed with or not. But he can't. So he just responds in earnest, his tone tentative and bewildered. ]
I, uhh— I'm the assistant manager? But, um— I know a bit about "fishing stuff." What's up? How can I help you boys?
[ Alberto seems satisfied with this level of authority, so presses on with a second question the man never expected to be asked. ]
We were wondering why you trapped all the fish in there. Is it to show people how to use the fishing stuff?
[ The man pauses before answering, his eyes following Alberto pointing to the aquarium display, before looking to Luca again as if to say "Is your friend for real?" He seriously can't tell if he's being goofed on... It's literally his first day here and it's his first time in management ever, he's on his way to his lunch break, and this is what he gets asked...? ]
[ He glances to Luca for back-up, reading the man's exasperated face. ]
Uh— Ha... Y-Yeah, they're just for decoration...?
[ Alberto narrows his eyes at that explanation. ]
Sooo... They're in prison to look pretty? Just because?
[ The ASM stalls, unable to find a quick, logical retort. Kid's not wrong, if you think about it, but... Why him. How do the weirdest customers always find him...? ]
Well, I guess that's a whole lot bigger than the bowl prisons we heard about. Even if I'm kind of surprised they're not for demonstration or even snacks.
[The ASM just stares for another moment before speaking.]
[ Oh, no. They're flubbing this. Alberto knows this feeling. He holds a hand to Luca's chest, stepping forward slightly with an awkward grin, trying to smooth this over. ]
Snacks for the other fish, he means. Ha, cuz, y'know, fish eat fish. Hah... Guess you must've picked out the right ones so the decorations don't eat each other, huh? Ha ha...! You must be a great fish manager!
[ On the one hand, the praise feels nice after a horrible first day; on the other hand, this guy had nothing at all to do with the fish selection, had never considered this question before, and had only really taken notice of this fish tank while walking past it the day of his job interview last week. He's put completely on the spot here. It takes him pause again, eyes searching the boys' faces for some sign of sensibility, before it occurs to him: Maybe they're filming a TikTok. And he's the butt of some preteen joke. He starts scanning the scene around them for another kid holding a phone, but there's no one else. Alberto glances to Luca as if to ask "what's he looking for," turning to glance around himself, then shrugs at Luca when he, too, sees nothing.
Reading that silent exchange between them, the assistant manager gives up, barely repressing the urge to sigh. ]
I, uh— Y-yeah, I guess so, um. Thanks, kids. Is there anything else I can help you with, ooor—?
[Luca also glances around to see whatever it was that the guy might have been looking for, but he, too, sees nothing. He also suspects he's flubbing it between the man's confusion and Alberto's quick correction, so decides it might be best for them to bow out of the conversation quickly.]
[ Alberto follows Luca's lead on this, the two in silent agreement that this is their cue. He puts his hand on Luca's shoulder, gives the guy a salute, and turns on his heel jauntily to lead them away. ]
Yeah. Ciao, Mr Manager~
[ The manager stares after them for a second, baffled even more. He just got— saluted...? He awkwardly salutes them back, before heading off finally to his lunch break. ]
Uhh— Happy to help? C-Ciao...
[ Alberto leads them back through the fishing section, crossing under the aquarium archway with wandering eyes, though he keeps his hand on Luca's shoulder still. ]
Okay, so. That explains that. Kind of... Hah.
[ He throws Luca a knowing smirk and a little roll of his eyes. Humans' relationship to fish is just really weird, more and more... He can't say he gets it, but. Well. They wanted answers, they got an answer. ]
C'mon. Let's go buy stuff.
[ Because "buying stuff" is a general activity, y'know. An important traditional human hobby. And always exciting for Alberto. For as much as Alberto likes saving money for their Vespa, he also likes spending money... And hey, it's his birthday! They can go shopping. They're "rich," as far as they think, so he figures they can spare it every now and again. And now that he knows they've got to wait until his next birthday til Bruno helps them buy their Vespa, they've got another whole year to keep saving, so— who gives a clam.
Not to mention the energy drink kicking in will probably hamper some already poor impulse control in him... Thank goodness Luca's here to keep Alberto at least a little bit in check, birthday boy or not. They don't need one of everything in the sporting goods store. ]
[It's still weird, but it's an explanation. Luca quickly forgets that with the next suggestion, though.]
Yeah, let's go buy stuff!
[Spurred on by the energy drink, Luca is ready to race off and do some shopping! ...at least he has some idea of what they might not need, but he'll be fairly easy to talk into buying a lot of things. Especially since it's Alberto's birthday, and he needs an amazing birthday.]
[ Luca's eager agreement puts a grin on Alberto's face, and he claps him on the back as he starts trotting onward. In a basket just to the edge of the fishing section, he sees some wooden hand nets — made to look to be more handcrafted-like than they actually are, to no doubt evoke some romanticized rugged exoticism, based upon the price point. It should either cost a lot less, for being as cheaply made as it is, or a lot more, if it were actually benefiting any local tradesmen — but since it's just an average, mass-produced corporate doodad meant to look chic for a fisherman's inner hipster, or a hipster's inner fisherman, it's at exactly the mid-level price point it doesn't deserve. Too expensive for what it is but less expensive than what it's trying to be. Not that Alberto knows any better. He grabs four on their way past. So they can... go trout fishing with at least two friends?
As he grabs them, he feels that Monster finally take effect, like a subtle jolt of lightning, a pleasant shiver up his spine, that subsides as suddenly as it came. It's this exact moment that's the Point of No Return for Alberto's first experience with energy drinks. What's more, they still have a bag full of more tucked under the crook of Alberto's elbow. But indeed, a switch just flipped on some level... Took longer for the switch to flip than it did when they first tried espresso, but considering just how much espresso Alberto's since come to consume on a near daily basis... that checks out.
He spots a shopping cart corral up ahead, and waving Luca along excitedly, runs up to grab one. He tosses their plastic bag from the corner store and the four hand nets he'd just grabbed all into the trolly together rather carelessly — in fact, almost pointedly, like making the least impressive slam dunk ever... He spins the shopping cart round to face the openness of the store, leaning on its handlebars with one foot propped up on the bottom rung, idly making it do a tiny wheelie as they look on at the expanse of treasures before them. All at once, he's forebodingly excited... He pauses for a beat, letting a low whistle of appreciation out, before turning to Luca with a grin from the side. ]
Sooo, you miiight've picked the coolest store ever? Next to the Home Depot. Maybe — hah! Dai, avanti. What should we buy~?
[ Definitely not all stores are this cool. Alberto's done more than a fair bit of exploring in the city, and this is one of the best places they've found — and somehow even more exciting that Luca found it. He gets the cool points.
He follows Luca's line of sight, seeing the soccer balls. Alberto gives a nod of his head toward them, throwing Luca a smirk, before zipping off with the cart together. Once over there, there's actually a pretty wide variety of soccer balls... even a fair few novelty ones. Alberto catches sight of some neon green and blue ones right away, but when he swings the cart around to position themselves better, he accidentally knocks it into the display. It's not hard enough to knock any balls out (though his heart drops for a second, thinking he might've freed them all), it is enough impact to send a shudder up the rack of neon balls... which, all at once, light up.
Any fear Alberto had about possibly messing up the store, is immediately forgotten in utter delight at the sight of the glow-balls all activating in unison. He turns to Luca with a dazzled smile. Guess what they're buying... ]
